Coaches Represent North Central Kansas Success

The 27th Annual 8-Man All-Star Games will take place in Beloit at Trojan Field tomorrow.  The 8-Man DI All-Star Game begins at 10:00 a.m., and the DII All-Star Game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.  This week we have talked a lot about the local flavor as far as the athletes are concerned, but there will also be three coaches from the KD Country 94 & Z 96.3 listening area putting their systems to the test.

Sam Meyers of Rock Hills High School is the DI East head coach.  Curt Christians of the Lakeside Knights is one of Meyers’ assistants.  Also, in a unique situation, Steve Tiernan of Osborne High School is helping coach the DII East squad.

Meyers was an assistant coach last season for the DI East team, as Russ Steinbrock of Clifton-Clyde invited him to join his staff.  This year came the opportunity to be the head coach, and Meyers didn’t think twice about making the trip again.  Sam has a career record of 42-30 in 8 seasons in Mankato.  Included in that was a 7-3 finish in 2011 and the school’s second playoff berth.

We caught up with Meyers earlier this week, and he talked about the team of All-Stars he has and how truly talented they are.

Meyers on Talent

For Curt Christians, he helped pull Lakeside out of some rough times.  Prior to Christians’ tenure, in 2008, the Knights went 0-8, but through Christians’ guidance, and a very hard working Class of 2012, the Knights were able to turn that around.  They went 8-2 with their first playoff appearance in school history in 2010, and followed that up with their best season yet in 2011, going 11-1 and falling to Madison in the Sub-State round of the DI playoffs in Madison.  Christians is happy to be a part of the week and also happy to see the three players he has from Lakeside in Alex Clark, Miles Thomas and Alex Renken get one last chance.

Steve Tiernan of Osborne is in a unique situation.  After guiding Osborne to a 10-2 finish in 2011, and just one win away from the DI State Championship Game, Tiernan is part of the DII coaching staff, assisting Justin Coup of B&B High School.  The best way to explain this is to let Tiernan do it himself.

Tiernan on Week-Helping

No matter how these three coaches got here this weekend, it’s clear that their teams will benefit from their knowledge of the game.  That will all come full circle on Saturday at Trojan Field in Beloit.  Again the DI kickoff is at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, with DII scheduled for 1:00 p.m.  Coverage will begin on KD Country 94 and at 9:30 a.m. with pregame.
