Fans can listen to the games on the Kansas 8-Man All-Star Game Radio Network with pregame coverage beginning at 9:30 a.m.The St. John’s/Tipton Blujays have the maximum number of participants a team can have in this year’s event for the DII West squad. Players Trey Dubbert, Riley Gates and Michael Schmitt will all be suited up on Saturday, and they will be guided by their head coach Keith Kresin.
All of the Blujays’ representatives have been a key part in a great run of success for St. John’s/Tipton. Over the past three seasons, the Blujays qualified for the playoffs in 8-Man DII each year, going 26-6 in that time, including an 11-1 Sub-State Runner-up finish in 2013. This past season, they made it to the playoffs as the Runner-up in District 7, but with many injuries and a tough first round matchup, they were eliminated by Wallace County for the third straight year and finished 7-3.
Leading the pack for the Blujays is three-year starting QB Trey Dubbert. Dubbert threw for just over 3,900 yards and 64 TD in his career, compared to only 17 INT. As a senior, he had his best season yardage and TD wise with 1,590 yards and 28 TD passes. He was an HM All-State pick and an easy All-District 7 pick at QB. Also as a senior, he dominated on defense, leading the Blujays with 107 tackles and being selected as a 1st Team All-State LB. Dubbert is excited about the opportunity to play in the 8-Man All-Star Game and especially about his chance to play for Coach Kresin one final time.
Riley Gates was a solid starter on the offensive line for St. John’s/Tipton over the past three seasons, starting at Guard his sophomore and senior seasons and filling a needed role as the starting Center as a junior. Over the past two seasons for St. John’s/Tipton, Gates was named 1st Team All-District and honorable mention All-State on the offensive line. Gates is an example of hard work paying off as he explains.
Michael Schmitt has continued to get better each year for the Blujays program and broke onto the scene as a two-way starter on the line as a senior. Schmitt was selected as an All-State honorable mention lineman and 1st Team All-District defensive lineman as a senior, as he registered 77 tackles and three sacks on the season. Schmitt is excited about padding up one last time with his teammates and coach.
As far as Keith Kresin goes, he is very happy to be able to coach his three all-stars for the last time.
