40 of the top 8-Man football seniors in the state of Kansas played in the 8-Man Division II All-Star Game Saturday morning in Beloit. The DII East spotted the West 12 early points off of two early turnovers and ended up coughing the ball up four more times in the game, as the West pulled away to a 40-20 win, snapping a 4-game winning streak for the East in the series.
The West led the game from start to finish as it began with the East giving up the ball on their opening play, as the West recovered an East fumble at the East 11 yard line. Two plays later, St. John’s/Tipton QB Trey Dubbert connected with Victoria’s Noah Dreiling for a 10-yard TD to give the West a 6-0 lead.
On the very next possession for the East, Weskan’s Grant Frasier helped out the West as he picked off a pass from the East’s QB Philip Moses of Chetopa and returned it to the East 6 yard line. Two plays later, Fairfield’s Cannon Burns scored from three yards out for the West to bring their lead to 12-0.
The East would fumble again on their next possession after driving the ball all the way down to the West 3 yard line, but the defense for the East made a stop to get the ball back, and finally broke the seal on the scoreboard on their fourth possession, which was a 5-play, 33-yard drive that ended with a 14 yard TD pass from Moses to Sam Wencel of Caldwell to bring the East within six at 12-6 after one quarter.
In the 2nd Quarter, the West scored on an 8-play, 75-yard drive that was capped with Dubbert and Dreiling teaming up for their second TD of the day, this time on a 10-yard pass. Dubbert hit Dreiling on the 2-point attempt as well to give the West a 20-6 lead.
The East would not go away though, as they responded with a 6-play, 65-yard drive of their own, as Axtell’s Shane Talbot finished the drive with an 8-yard TD run. Sylvan-Lucas’s Collin Herold hit Wencel on a pass to bring the East back within six, 20-14 at the break.
The West got things going in the 2nd half, as they marched 64 yards in just six plays to start the third quarter. Dubbert ended that drive with a 2-yard TD run, giving the West a 26-14 advantage.
The East would get back within six one final time as they went 46 yards in 10 plays and South Barber’s Dylan Allison scored on a 17-yard TD run to make it 26-20 in favor of the West after three quarters.
The final 14 points were scored by the West, as they had a 7-play, 41-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard TD run by Burns and a 2-point connection between Dubbert and Dreiling again. Then, with 3:18 remaining in the game, the West scored the final TD of the game, as the East turned the ball over for the 6th time on the day, which was an interception by Hoxie’s Connor Katt, returned 28 yards for a TD and a 40-20 West win.
Trey Dubbert finished the game with 168 yards and 2 TD passing, while Noah Dreiling led the West in receiving with 6 catches for 81 yards. For the East, Collin Herold finished with 120 yards passing, and Dylan Allison had 81 rushing yards and 69 receiving yards to lead the team in both of those categories.
