Jeff Vogel, Kansas Department of Agriculture Plant Protection and Weed Control Manager, talked about the need for farmers to be proactive in wheat disease control. For the first time since the 1930’s, Kansas saw Wheat flag smut emerge in 2015. While infestations were generally low, the disease can be a real problem. Fusarium was also a major problem. Vogel encourages growers to apply fungicides to wheat seed before planting this Fall.
