As has been the case in the previous two contests in Division I, the 8-Man All-Star Game on Saturday morning and afternoon came down to the wire. In the end, the West snapped a two game run from the East, winning 24-20.
After forcing a 3-and-out from the East on their first possession, the West scored first with a 10-yard TD pass from Solomon QB Jake Tiernan to Canton-Galva’s Travis Unruh. The PAT failed, as the West held a 6-0 lead just over halfway through the 1st quarter.
The East would respond on their next possession, scoring on a 9-yard TD pass from Central-Burden’s Lucas McMichael to Paden Pralle of Hanover. Pralle scored his first career TD on the Guard-eligible play. The East was stopped on their PAT attempt, and the score was 6-6 after the 1st quarter.
The West scored the only TD of the 2nd quarter. Jordan Duvall of Ellinwood capped off a 7 play, 59 yard drive with a 20-yard TD run. The West took a 12-6 lead into the locker room.
The West extended their lead, scoring the only TD in the 3rd quarter, as Duvall scored again from 3 yards out. Again the PAT failed, as the West held an 18-6 advantage after three quarters.
Early in the 4th quarter, the West put together a 7 play, 45 yard drive that was capped by a 4-yard TD run by Bryson Wesley of Decatur Community. The East held again on the PAT, and the West led 24-6 with 10:25 remaining.
From that point, the East offense woke up. On the ensuing possession, Zac Walter of Lincoln connected with Udall’s Nolan Williams on a TD pass from 12 yards out. Walter added the PAT to cut the lead to 10 at 24-14.
The East would force a 3-and-out for the West and responded with a quick 3 play, 70 yard drive, that was capped with a 60-yard TD pass from Walter to Armando Gomez of West Elk. The two-point attempt failed, and the score remained 24-20 with 2:23 remaining.
The East defense stepped up again, getting a turnover on downs from the West. However, on the first play of their final possession, Walter left a back foot throw short, and it was intercepted by Cole Lohrding of South Central for the West. The West went into victory formation to seal the 24-20 win.
With the win, the West extended their overall lead to 10-6 in the DI All-Star Game series.
